Experience Local Jordan

For this journey, I was invited by Leaders International  to experience their latest project in Jordan, ‘Experience Local Jordan.’

Leaders International is a global network of organizations specializing in improving the economy in developing countries and conflict-affected areas. Their main goal is to help people in these regions access the resources they need for a better economic situation. With ‘Experience Local Jordan,’ Leaders International focuses on sustainable and authentic travel experiences, guided by local communities in Jordan that are not as well-known.

And this just happens to be what I love to do the most. Packed and ready, I traveled to Jordan to explore the local Jordan together with other travel professionals. Based on my experiences, I designed a 7 day Jordan itinerary. This itinerary naturally includes the most beautiful landmarks and sights but also offers plenty of tips for unique, lesser-known activities that allow you to truly experience the local culture in Jordan.

The ultimate 7 day Jordan itinerary

Day 1 – Amman

Since the chances are high that you’ll arrive in Amman, we’ll begin the first day of the 7-day Jordan travel itinerary in the bustling capital.

What to do in Amman?  

Amman, the bustling capital of Jordan, offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and yes, trendy hotspots. Here are some highlights of what you can do in Amman during your trip in Jordan.

• Stroll along Rainbow Street: Rainbow Street is a popular entertainment district with boutiques, cafes, and art galleries. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak in the city’s ambiance.
• Take a trip to the King Abdullah I Mosque: This beautiful mosque, with its striking blue dome, is an architectural masterpiece and a significant religious monument in Amman.

 

• Visit the Jordan Museum: This museum houses a wealth of archaeological discoveries and historical artifacts that illustrate Jordan’s rich history.
• Immerse yourself in the centuries-old, traditional crafts of ceramics and mosaics. Join one of the various workshops, where you have the opportunity to witness the experts at work and even create your own masterpieces. You can do this with Omar, Yousra, or Hind.

Where to eat in Amman? 

Taste the local cuisine in Amman. Enjoy delicious Jordanian dishes such as falafel, mansaf, and knafeh at local restaurants and food stalls in the city.

For the best hummus and falafels in Amman, you should head to Hashem. The tastiest knafeh can be found at Habibi, a bakery considered the best in Amman with multiple branches throughout the city. For an authentic Amman experience, it’s best to visit the original location in the city center, near the Arab Bank.

Be sure to visit Souq Al-Sukar, also known as the ‘Sugar Market.’ Here, you can find an abundance of traditional sweets, such as candies, pastries, nuts, and enjoy the bustling atmosphere.

In Amman, you can enjoy stunning city views from various rooftop terraces, such as the one at District Rooftop. During ‘happy hour’ between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, also known as ‘hangry hour,’ you can savor delicious food at a more affordable price.

Or, you can participate in the cooking and dining experiences at Makmoret Shahnaz. Here, you’ll learn about local ingredients and traditional cooking techniques while savoring the authentic flavors of Jordan. Moreover, you can try on traditional clothing and capture the moment with a photo. In short, it’s a fantastic activity to immerse yourself in Jordanian culture.

Where to stay in Amman?  

If you’re looking for accommodation in the heart of Amman, you have several great options. The charming boutique hotel Khan Khediwe Hotel is perfect for those who prefer an intimate atmosphere. If you prefer an apartment, The House Boutique Suites is an excellent choice.

For those who love luxury, there are some top hotels like St. Regis Amman and The Ritz-Carlton Amman, renowned for their first-class service and amenities. If you’re seeking a more budget-friendly option, consider the Sandra Hotel.

What to do around Amman? 

Do you have more than a week to explore Jordan? Then consider spending an extra day in Amman. Alternatively, opt for a day trip from Amman to Jerash, which is just 50 km away. Jerash is known as the ‘Pompeii of Jordan’ due to the impressive remains of the Roman city of Gerasa. This significant archaeological site provides insights into the rich history of the region and is adorned with magnificent monuments such as an oval plaza, a triumphal arch, theaters, and colonnaded streets. It is undoubtedly a must-see destination for history and culture enthusiasts.

In addition to the impressive monuments in Jerash, there are also numerous local initiatives where you can get acquainted with the local culture.

Pay a visit to Beit Al Asaleh, a place that promotes sustainability and culture by supporting local projects. Here, you can savor local cuisine, discover the art of tatreez, witness traditional crafts, and even observe bees. It’s a fantastic way to support the local community and immerse yourself in Jordanian culture.

In Jordan colored sand bottles are a beloved souvenir. You know those bottles where sand is intricately poured into to create beautiful designs. At Zainab’s Bottled Sand Art Experience in Jerash, you can learn this art form yourself. At the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to take your own unique creation home as a memento.

In Jerash, you can also get acquainted with traditional Jordanian clothing. Photographer Nermin will be delighted to assist you in selecting an appropriate outfit for a photoshoot.

Would you like to stay in Jerash? Then you can head to Bayt Al-Sultana B’n’B. At this hidden gem, you can enjoy beautiful views, artistic workshops such as soap making, embroidery, and knitting, and, of course, delightful treats.

Day 2: Dana Nature Reserve 

Rise and shine early for the approximately 3-hour drive from Amman to the Dana Nature Reserve. During this journey along the scenic King’s Highway, you can relish breathtaking Jordanian landscapes. Along the route, you’ll encounter historical sites, charming villages, and impressive canyons, with the highlight being the awe-inspiring Dana Gorge.

The Dana Nature Reserve is one of the most remarkable natural areas in Jordan. Located on the edge of the Jordanian Rift Valley, the reserve offers a breathtaking variety of landscapes, ranging from deep canyons to vast desert plateaus. It is renowned for its impressive biodiversity and is home to rare plant and animal species, including the endangered Nubian ibex.

Hiking in Dana Nature Reserve  

For adventurous visitors, the Dana Nature Reserve features an extensive network of hiking trails, including the famous Petra Trek. This hiking route is part of the renowned Jordan Trail, a long-distance hiking trail that spans across Jordan, consisting of 35 segments. The Petra Trek, starting in Dana, comprises 4 segments and is highly recommended for avid hikers. If you plan to embark on this trek, it’s advisable to hire a guide for a safe and optimal experience.

Since we have just one day to explore the Dana Nature Reserve in this 7 day Jordan itinerary, the Shaq Al-reesh trail is an excellent alternative. This 3 km loop trail allows you to savor the breathtaking landscapes, deep ravines, and diverse flora and fauna. It’s also a great opportunity for birdwatching, as the reserve hosts rare bird species in their natural habitat.

Explore the deep-rooted local culture in Dana

The Dana Nature Reserve is dedicated to sustainable tourism and preserving local culture. Here, you can stay in eco-friendly accommodations and experience the hospitality of the local community.

You can immerse yourself in authentic village life . Welcoming local families are eager to share their traditional practices with you, such as ancient cooking techniques (e.g., baking bread or cookies), cultivating crops, and milking goats

Or, you can learn traditional cooking with local chef Wasayef from Al-Tafileh. Together, you’ll prepare the famous ‘upside-down’ meal using typical Jordanian ingredients while enjoying a stunning view of the Dhana Mountains. It’s a unique opportunity to experience culture and culinary traditions amid breathtaking nature.

Where to stay near Dana? 

Enjoy a sustainable stay at the Dana Nature Reserve in one of the following accommodations: Dana Sunset Eco Camp or Al-Nawatef ECO Camp – Dana Nature Reserve.

Day 3 – Petra 

Prepare for an exciting day. Start your day early with a hearty breakfast before making your way to the world-famous landmark Petra, located just an hour’s drive from the Dana Nature Reserve.

Discover enchanting Petra 

Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is an ancient city carved into the rocks in the 4th century BC. Here, you’ll marvel at the stunning pink sandstone facades, with the iconic ‘Treasury’ being the most remarkable. Once the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom, Petra is an absolute must-see in Jordan today. Explore the hidden canyons and admire the enchanting architecture that makes Petra a magical place. Please note that because Petra is such a popular landmark, it can get very crowded. So it’s best to go as early as possible.

Do you want to learn more about Petra? Then opt for an engaging guided tour led by the local guide Ma’moun Al-Nawafleh, a proud resident of Wadi Musa. He’ll take you on an immersive journey through the famous Nabatean civilization, the archeo-astronomy of Petra, and reveal the ancient inscriptions carved into the historic walls. With his enthusiasm for Petra, inherited from his father, Ma’moun turns this tour into an unforgettable and vivid experience.

Of course, you can spend a full day, or even multiple days, exploring the breathtaking Petra. And for those who are in Petra on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, there’s an enchanting opportunity to experience the city by candlelight with Petra by Night.

However, when you have just 7 days in Jordan, you’ll have to make choices. That’s why, on this 7 day Jordan itinerary, we decide to depart for the stunning landscape of Wadi Rum after a half-day tour in Petra, which is a 2-hour drive away.

What to do around Petra?  

If you decide to spend a bit more time in Petra, there are several beautiful sights and activities nearby.

You can visit Little Petra, also known as ‘Siq al-Barid.’ This is an archaeological site near Petra, often referred to as a mini-Petra, and it reveals the ancient lifestyle and architecture of the Nabateans. Like Petra, Little Petra features rock-cut buildings such as houses and tombs, amidst impressive cliffs and narrow canyons. You can enjoy the ancient history and unique atmosphere here, without the large crowds you find in Petra.

Delve into the ancient Nabatean art of jewelry creation. The land of the Nabateans was abundantly blessed with silver and gold, leading to an exceptional skill in the art of jewelry making. These ornaments served not only as protection against diseases and accidents but also as symbols of status and wealth. Notably, Nabatean jewelry stands out from those of other ancient cultures as they did not feature images and relied more on refined techniques like patination and filigree work. You can seize the opportunity to participate in a workshop conducted by local craftswomen Fawziyeh Al Hassanat or Basma Al Hassanat, where you’ll learn the centuries-old Nabatean techniques to craft your own silver jewelry.

Where to stay near Petra? 

Evening 3 – Wadi Rum 

One must-visit destination in Jordan is unquestionably Wadi Rum, an enchanting desert valley in the south of Jordan. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a visual spectacle with its red sand dunes, impressive rock formations, and majestic mountains.

Bedouin tribes have lived here for generations in harmony with nature. Wadi Rum is more than a magical destination. It’s also a treasure trove of history, culture, and adventure.

Start your Wadi Rum adventure with a sunset jeep tour. This way, you can explore the breathtaking desert landscape during the golden hour when the rocks turn red and are at their most beautiful. An expert Bedouin guide will lead you through the labyrinth of sand dunes, rocky canyons, and towering red cliffs. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to visit iconic locations such as Lawrence’s Spring, ancient petroglyphs, and unique rock formations, all while learning about the rich history, geology, and Bedouin culture of the region.

The jeep excursions provide the quickest way to explore the most beautiful spots and archaeological sites, totaling 19 in all. You have the option to visit various combinations of these captivating sites in a single tour. The tours start at the visitor center, where you can choose from one of the 9 tour packages, ranging from 2 hours to a full day. Where to stay in Wadi Rum 

There are numerous options for staying in a tent camp in Wadi Rum, giving you the choice between an authentic and simple tent or a luxury glamping experience in one of the renowned ‘domes.’ I stayed at Sun City Camp, where the best of both worlds is offered. Here, you can choose between traditional Bedouin-style tents and modern Martian domes to find the accommodation that best suits your preferences. Moreover, the dinner, where you can witness how zarb is prepared in the ground, and the extensive breakfast buffet with various local dishes, were excellent.

Admire the stars in Wadi rum up close

It’s widely known that deserts are perfect for stargazing and astronomical observation, and Wadi Rum is no exception. Here, you’re treated to a stunning display of the night sky. So, after dinner, be sure to participate in a stargazing experience where you’ll not only learn how to orient yourself using the stars but also have the opportunity to use telescopes to get a close-up view of the enchanting night sky above Wadi Rum. During my visit, I even had the chance to admire the majestic planet Saturn.

Day 4: Wadi Rum – Aqaba 

Unique awakening in Wadi Rum

Waking up in Wadi Rum can be done in various ways. You can choose to enjoy a serene morning and witness the sunrise from the panoramic window of your dome or from the camp where you’re staying. However, for a truly unforgettable experience, you can also opt for a hot air balloon ride over the otherworldly landscape of Wadi Rum at sunrise. While it requires to wake up early, it’s undoubtedly worth it.

Enjoy a delicious local breakfast before you head to your next destination Aqaba, which is just an hour’s drive from the Wadi Rum Visitor Centre.

After a fairly intense journey with plenty of culture and adventure, it’s time to relax for a day. And where better than in Aqaba by the Red Sea? Aqaba is primarily known for its beautiful coastline with crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. It’s truly a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

If lounging on the beach isn’t your thing, there are plenty of fun alternatives to get to know Aqaba and the local culture better.

What to do in Aqaba?  

Do you love diving? Then you absolutely must go on a diving adventure Hashem Shmayleh. Shmayleh is a certified dive instructor who offers safe and educational diving trips. He not only showcases the underwater world but also highlights local culture and traditions. He emphasizes sustainable tourism and responsible diving, with a focus on respecting the marine environment and minimizing the impact on the Red Sea ecosystems. In short, an unforgettable experience for divers of all levels.

If diving isn’t your thing, then a fishing tour with Osama might be more to your liking. This tour offers a unique opportunity to learn traditional fishing practices and get hands-on experience. You’ll be guided by Osama in the fishing process using traditional techniques and visit the fish market to discover the various fish species caught in Aqaba. Additionally, you can participate in a cooking session where you’ll learn how to prepare fish according to traditional recipes and local ingredients.

Do you prefer an activity on land? Then explore Aqaba like a local with ‘AAqaba by Locals.’ A group of enthusiastic locals has put together an interactive map that guides you to the city’s hidden treasures. Along the route, you’ll discover historical sites, vibrant markets, and authentic eateries. In short, the perfect activity for an authentic Aqaba experience.

When visiting Aqaba, you absolutely must try the local dish Sayadeyyeh. And what better way to experience this traditional dish than by learning to make it yourself? Join a cooking workshop with chef Mohammad Atili and uncover the secrets behind his famous Sayadeyyeh. Learn the traditional preparation techniques and discover the cultural significance of this dish. In short, an unforgettable culinary experience in Aqab

While in Aqaba, be sure to check if you watch a performance by the Aqaba Marine Group for Folklore Art. With their folkloric musical show, featuring traditional instruments and dance, this experience provides a unique insight into the rich culture and history of Aqaba.

Where to stay in Aqaba?  

Along the beautiful shores of the Red Sea, Jordan offers a diverse selection of accommodations for every traveler. If you’re looking for an unparalleled luxury experience, the Kempinski Hotel Aqaba and Al Manara, a Luxury Collection Hotel Aqaba, offer beautiful retreats with lush amenities and stunning views.

Day 5 – Aqaba – Dead Sea

From the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, or from a sea full of life to a sea full of salt. Along Highway 65, it takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to travel from Aqaba to the resorts at the Dead Sea. But why is the Dead Sea a must-do in Jordan?

The Dead Sea, located at the lowest point on Earth (430 meters below sea level), is anything but dead! What makes this saltwater sea remarkable is its extremely high salt content, allowing you to effortlessly float. It’s like having your own personal floating pool. But that’s not all! The Dead Sea is also known for its therapeutic mud that is good for your skin and overall well-being. So, float on the water, lather yourself with mud, and pamper yourself in this unique saltwater oasis. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a spectacular landscape.

To float in the Dead Sea, you can choose to stay at a resort with access to the Dead Sea or visit one of the many local beaches.

Where to ear near the Dead Sea?  

If you want to enjoy delicious local food near the Dead Sea, I have the perfect place for you. Reserve a table at the heritage restaurant Beit Sweimeh,, where local traditions are embraced, and authentic dishes are prepared. Here, you can indulge in a truly local feast. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite restaurants in Jordan

Where to stay near the Dead Sea?  

Around the Dead Sea, you’ll find plenty of luxury resorts like the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar,, Mövenpick Resort & Spa, and Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa. These resorts offer first-class amenities, spas, beautiful pools, and private access to the Dead Sea. Since you’re spending two days at this destination, why not opt for that extra touch of luxury? 

Day 6: Adventure in Wadi Mujib or culture in Madaba? 

In the surroundings of the Dead Sea, there’s plenty to experience. You can opt for a day of adventure in Wadi Mujib or a day of culture in Madaba without having to travel far.

Canyoning in Wadi Mujib 

The Wadi Mujib river canyon is often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Jordan.” It’s a spectacular natural rock formation on the eastern shores of the Dead Sea. This deep canyon is crossed by the Mujib River and is known for its ancient cliffs and waterfalls. Here, you can go hiking, swimming, and engage in canyoning. In short, it’s the place to be for adventurous travelers. The Mujib Biosphere Reserve is the world’s lowest nature reserve and houses a diverse ecosystem with plant and animal species, including the striking Ibex goats.

There are several hiking and canyoning routes that start at the Wadi Mujib Adventure Center. Make sure to choose the right trail and inquire if you need a guide. Keep in mind that Wadi Mujib is closed from November to March. Double-check the opening hours with your hotel, as heavy rain can lead to the reserve being closed.

For those who want to try canyoning, the Siq Trail is an accessible option for beginners. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory, but you can do the trail without a guide. The whole course takes about 2 hours, including swimming, hiking, climbing to a waterfall and back.

Culture in Madaba 

Madaba is a historic city famous for its ancient mosaics and archaeological treasures. The highlight of the city is the Madaba Mosaic Map, which is a must-see. The map provides a detailed depiction of the region and surroundings, including Jerusalem.

Additionally, Madaba is home to several historic churches, such as the St. George Church and the St. John Church, which contain impressive mosaics.

You can also book various local activities here, including cooking classes for traditional dishes, henna art, Noll weaving, trying on traditional clothing, mosaic art, the Al Sija game, and much more.

At Bani Hamida’s Guesthouse in Madaba, you can delve into the age-old art of weaving. This initiative, started by twelve tribal members in 1985, has gained a reputation for creating woven products in traditional, vibrant colors. Here, you can learn Noll weaving, discover local culture, explore history, and enjoy a traditional meal prepared by your local host. In short, it’s a unique experience to uncover the rich weaving traditions of the Bedouins.

Day 7:  Dead Sea – Amman 

For an enchanting final moment in Jordan definitely go floating in the Dead Sea during sunrise. Afterward, savor a hearty breakfast and depart with a heart full of unforgettable memories back to Amman, from where you’ll head home. If you have some time before departure, consider one last visit to Amman, using the tips I shared at the beginning of this travel itinerary
