Sanibel & Captiva

Sanibel Island is located in the Gulf of Mexico, just west of Fort Myers. The island is known for its peaceful atmosphere, unspoiled nature, and some of the most beautiful clear water beaches in Florida. You reach Sanibel by crossing a long bridge where a toll fee applies. From that moment on, the busy mainland instantly feels far away.

Together with Captiva Island, it forms a unique island destination along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Both islands are famous for their white sandy beaches and incredible seashells. In fact, Sanibel Island is considered one of the best places in the world for shelling.

What makes Sanibel Island even more special is its slow pace and natural surroundings. You’ll find protected nature reserves, plenty of bike paths, and very few high-rise buildings. Everything feels small-scale, relaxed, and authentic.

Although the islands are relatively small, there is surprisingly plenty to do. You can easily spend several days here without ever feeling rushed. It’s the perfect destination to slow down and enjoy the sun, sea, and nature.

How to travel to Sanibel & Captiva 

Traveling to Sanibel Island and Captiva Island from Belgium usually starts with a flight. The fastest option is flying from Brussels to Southwest Florida International Airport. With one layover, the journey takes around 13 to 16 hours. This is the closest airport, located about a 45-minute drive from Sanibel Island.

You can also fly into Miami International Airport or Orlando International Airport. From there, it’s about a 3 to 4-hour drive to the islands. This option is perfect if you want to combine your trip with a road trip through the United States.

Renting a car is highly recommended. Public transportation in this area is limited, and having a car gives you complete freedom to explore. From Fort Myers, you can reach Sanibel Island via the Sanibel Causeway, a long bridge where a toll fee applies.

There are no trains or buses that travel directly to the islands. Taxis and shuttle services are available, but they are more expensive and far less flexible.

In short, flying combined with a rental car is the best way to start your trip stress-free.

How many days do you need to explore Sanibel Island and Captiva Island?

You don’t need a huge amount of time to explore Sanibel Island and Captiva Island, but you do need enough time to truly experience the slow island rhythm. Ideally, you should plan for 3 to 4 days.

With 2 days, you can already get a good first impression. You’ll be able to visit some of the best beaches Sanibel is known for and enjoy your first unforgettable sunset. Still, this can feel a little rushed.

With 3 to 4 days, you have more time to slow down. You can explore different beaches, go shelling, and cycle through the islands’ beautiful nature. It also gives you enough time to enjoy some of the fun things that you can do on Sanibel Island, including wildlife spotting, kayaking, and visiting nearby Captiva Island.

If you have more time, staying 5 days or longer is definitely worth it. These islands are not about filling your itinerary with activities, but about relaxation and atmosphere. The longer you stay, the more you’ll experience that typical laid-back island feeling. Where to stay on Sanibel Island?

Where to stay on Sanibel Island mainly depends on the kind of atmosphere you are looking for, as the island has no large resorts or high-rise buildings. And that is exactly what makes it so charming. You’ll mostly find small-scale hotels, cozy beach resorts, vacation rentals, and beautiful airbnb Sanibel options, often surrounded by lush greenery or located directly by the ocean.

Most accommodations are situated along the south and west coast, where you’ll also find some of the best beaches Sanibel is famous for. If you want to stay close to restaurants and shops, it’s best to choose accommodation on the eastern side of the island, closer to the bridge. If you are mainly looking for peace, quiet, and nature, the western parts of the island are ideal.

Sanibel Island is not about luxury in the traditional sense, but about space, nature, and that typical relaxed island vibe. Many accommodations offer direct beach access, which makes the experience even more special.

The best beaches on Sanibel

1 – Bowman’s Beach

The most photogenic, and surprisingly peaceful,  beach we visited on Sanibel Island was without a doubt Bowman’s Beach. This is also one of the best beaches Sanibel is known for when it comes to finding unique seashells.

As soon as you arrive, you immediately notice how well-maintained and organized the beach is. There is plenty of parking, and everything feels clean and well cared for. From the parking area, you still have to walk a few hundred meters to reach the beach, but we actually loved that part. You walk through shaded nature trails and cross a charming wooden bridge on your way to the ocean. Along the way, you’ll also find picnic tables and even BBQ areas.

Once you arrive at the beach, you’re rewarded with a wide stretch of soft white sand. The area near the shoreline is covered with shells. Jan and I immediately started searching and found some truly beautiful ones.

Despite the excellent facilities, the beach never feels overcrowded. There is more than enough space for everyone. For us, this was the perfect combination of nature, tranquility, and experience.

2 – Blind Pass

If you are searching for the most beautiful seashells, Blind Pass Beach is one of the best places on Sanibel Island. This beach is located between Sanibel Island and Captiva Island and is known for its strong currents. Those currents constantly wash new shells ashore, making it a paradise for shell lovers.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice that this beach feels a little wilder and less developed. It is less “organized” compared to other beaches, but that is exactly what makes it so charming. Nature clearly takes the lead here.

The beach itself is slightly narrower, but the shoreline is often covered in shells, especially near the passage between the islands. We were genuinely surprised by both the variety and the number of beautiful shells we found here.

It’s the perfect place for a peaceful walk and a bit of exploring. Early mornings or moments just after high tide are usually the best times to discover unique shells.

For anyone who loves untouched nature and that authentic Sanibel feeling, Blind Pass Beach is an absolute must-visit.

3 – Lighthouse Beach & Fishing Pier

While searching for the perfect sunrise spot, locals recommended Lighthouse Beach Park on Sanibel Island. Located on the eastern side of the island, this is one of the few places where you can watch the sun rise directly over the ocean.

The beach gets its name from the historic lighthouse and the long fishing pier, both of which are still in use today and give this place its unique character. You’ll mostly encounter local fishermen, nature lovers, and photographers here.

Several nature trails also start near the beach, leading through mangroves and wetlands. This area is perfect for spotting wildlife, including pelicans and herons. And if you’re lucky, you might even see dolphins swimming close to the shore.

The beach itself is slightly narrower and surrounded by lush greenery, creating more sheltered and peaceful spots. It’s ideal if you are looking for privacy or simply want to relax in complete tranquility. It’s also a beautiful location for taking photos thanks to the lighthouse, tropical scenery, and soft sunrise light. We arrived before sunrise, when it was still almost dark, but the atmosphere already felt magical. As the sun slowly appeared, the sky turned soft shades of pink and orange.

Without a doubt, this was one of the most beautiful moments of our road trip through Florida.

4 – Gulfside City Park (Algiers Beach):

If you are looking for a peaceful all-round beach on Sanibel Island, then Gulfside City Park,  also known as Algiers Beach,  is a perfect choice. Located centrally on the island, this beach is very easy to reach.

What immediately stood out to us was the perfect balance between tranquility and comfort. The beach is wide and spacious, yet it never feels overcrowded. There is plenty of room to find your own peaceful spot while still enjoying all the facilities you might need.

From the parking area, short paths lead you through lush greenery toward the beach. Along the way, you’ll find picnic tables and shaded areas, making it ideal for a relaxing beach day.

The sand is soft and fine, and just like many of the best beaches Sanibel is known for, you’ll also discover beautiful seashells along the shoreline. It may not be the most dramatic beach on the island, but that is exactly what makes it so enjoyable. Everything simply feels easy and relaxing here.

For us, this was the perfect beach to completely unwind without giving up comfort. A true all-rounder that you’ll probably want to visit more than once during your stay.

5 – Tarpon Bay Beach

If you are looking for the best beach for swimming on Sanibel Island, then Tarpon Bay Beach is an excellent option. This beach feels slightly quieter and is known for its calmer waters.

What immediately stood out to us was how clear and inviting the ocean looked. Waves are usually gentle here, making it easy and relaxing to swim. It’s the perfect place if you simply want to cool off or spend more time floating in the water.

The beach is wide and spacious, with plenty of room to lay down your towel. From the parking lot, a short path leads directly to the beach. Everything is easy to access and very well maintained.

This is also a great beach for families. Thanks to the calm water, it feels a little safer and more relaxing. On top of that, the available facilities make your beach day even more comfortable.

We mainly came here to truly enjoy the ocean: swimming, floating, and relaxing. And honestly, sometimes that is all you need.

6 – Causeway Beaches

Parking: Roadside parking in designated areas
Facilities: Limited to none

For a completely different atmosphere, you should definitely visit the Causeway Beaches on Sanibel Island. These beaches are spread along the Sanibel Causeway, the long bridge connecting the mainland to the island.

What makes this place so unique is the combination of water on both sides. At the same time, you have views over the bay and the open ocean. It feels less like a traditional beach and more like a laid-back local hangout.

You simply park alongside the road and walk straight onto the beach. Everything feels very casual and relaxed. You’ll see people picnicking, fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the view.

The water here is often calmer, making it a great spot for a quick swim or to cool off during the day. Don’t expect many facilities, but that simplicity is exactly part of the charm.

We stopped here rather spontaneously and ended up staying much longer than planned. The atmosphere is simply different here: more local, less touristy, and incredibly relaxed.

The best beaches on Captiva  

1 – Turner Beach

Turner Beach is located on Captiva Island, right next to the bridge connecting the island with Sanibel Island. On both sides of the bridge, you’ll find beaches: Turner Beach on the Captiva side and Blind Pass Beach on the Sanibel side. We visited both, but Turner Beach personally became our favorite. It felt more spacious and noticeably quieter.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice that this beach attracts fewer crowds. Even with the long coastline, we quickly found a peaceful spot for ourselves. The atmosphere here feels calm, natural, and untouched. Perfect if you really want to escape the crowds.

The beach itself is wide and open, with beautiful views over the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the strong currents in this area, the water can sometimes be a bit rougher. That makes it slightly less ideal for long swims, but even better for simply enjoying the scenery and the raw beauty of nature.

For photography lovers, this is an incredible location. The combination of the open beach, moving water, and beautiful light creates stunning and dynamic images. We even tested our drone here and instantly fell in love with the tropical vibes.

This is one of those places where you spontaneously end up staying longer than expected: simply sitting, watching the ocean, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

2 – Captiva Beach

Facilities: None

Captiva Beach, located at the very tip of Captiva Island, is without a doubt one of the island’s most popular beaches. You notice that immediately upon arrival. Parking is limited and often fills up quickly. Still, a little patience is absolutely worth it, because this beach is stunning.

The beach itself is wide and spacious, with soft white sand and breathtaking views over the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Even though it can get busy, the atmosphere remains very relaxed. Thanks to the size of the beach, you can usually still find a peaceful spot for yourself.

What makes this beach so appealing is the combination of natural beauty and lively atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to spend a few relaxing hours, switching between sunbathing and refreshing swims in the ocean.

Keep in mind that there are no facilities available here. There are no toilets, showers, or changing rooms, which is really the only downside of this beach.

Captiva Beach is also known as one of the best sunset spots in the area. Its location makes it perfect for enjoying that magical golden evening light.

3 – Alison Hagerup Beach Park

If you are looking for the perfect balance between nature and comfort, then Alison Hagerup Beach Park is one of the best beaches on Captiva Island. Located close to the charming village of Captiva, this beach feels both beautifully maintained and wonderfully natural at the same time.

What immediately stood out to us was how organized everything felt without losing its authentic charm. Short walking paths guide you through tropical greenery toward the beach, and along the way you’ll find shaded areas and picnic spots.

The beach itself is wide, clean, and very well maintained. The soft white sand and gentle pastel colors create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. At the same time, it still feels quieter than some of the island’s more popular beaches.

Thanks to the available facilities, this is a very comfortable place to spend an entire beach day. Being able to rinse off under the outdoor showers or use the nearby restrooms really makes a difference.

For us, this was the perfect place to combine nature with convenience: relaxed island vibes without giving up comfort.

4 – South Seas Beach (North End)

For those looking for peace and quiet with a touch of luxury, the northern beach of South Seas Island Resort is one of the most beautiful spots on Captiva Island. This beach is located at the very end of the island and is part of the exclusive resort.

The location alone makes it feel special. Here, you are completely surrounded by nature, with wide-open views over the Gulf of Mexico. The atmosphere feels secluded, peaceful, and incredibly serene.

Because the beach is mainly accessible to resort guests, it stays remarkably quiet. There are no large crowds here: just space, silence, and a very relaxed atmosphere.

The beach itself is wide and beautifully maintained. Everything here reflects comfort and quality, from the lounge chairs and clean facilities to the perfectly cared-for surroundings.

For us, this was the ideal place to completely unwind. A place where you truly feel like you can leave everything behind and simply enjoy the moment.

Perfect for anyone who loves a peaceful and luxurious beach experience.

The best beaches Fort meyers 

1 – Bowditch Point Park – Fort Myers Beach

If you are looking for the best all-round beach in Fort Myers Beach, then Bowditch Point Park is an absolute must-visit. Located at the northern tip of Estero Island, this beach instantly feels different from the others.

What makes this place so special is the combination of untouched nature and wide-open beaches. On one side, you can walk through dunes and mangroves. On the other, you arrive at a broad and peaceful beach overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

Because this beach is located slightly farther away from the busy center, it feels noticeably quieter. There is more space, fewer crowds, and a much more relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a laid-back beach day.

This is also an excellent location for wildlife spotting. You’ll often see birds, beautiful seashells, and if you’re lucky, even dolphins swimming nearby. It’s also one of the best places in the area to watch the sunset.

For us, this was the perfect beach to combine everything: nature, tranquility, beautiful views, and comfort. A true all-round favorite.

2 – Lovers Key State Park – Fort Myers

From the parking area, you can either walk or take a shuttle to the beach. That small distance helps keep the beach surprisingly peaceful. Instead of crowds, you’ll mainly find nature, silence, and a very relaxed atmosphere.

The beach itself is wide and unspoiled, with soft sandy tones and lush greenery surrounding it. It almost feels like stepping onto a deserted tropical island. Perfect if you truly want to escape the busy tourist areas.

This is also one of the best spots in the region for wildlife lovers. You can often spot dolphins, birds, and even manatees in the lagoons. Kayaking through the mangroves is also very popular here.

For us, this was one of the most relaxing places in the entire area: tropical, peaceful, and just that little bit more special than the rest.

3 – Fort Myers Beach centrum (Times Square)

For a lively beach experience, head to the center of Fort Myers Beach around the famous Times Square. This is the place where everything comes together: beach, atmosphere, entertainment, and fun. It’s also one of the best places if you are looking for fun things to do in Fort Myers.

The vibe here is completely different from the quieter beaches in the area. Think beach bars, restaurants, live music, and street performers. The whole area feels vibrant, energetic, and very much alive.

The beach itself is wide and very easy to access. You can walk straight from the center onto the sand, making it ideal if you enjoy combining beach time with drinks, shopping, or dinner nearby.

Because of its central location, this beach is usually busier. Still, that lively atmosphere is exactly part of its charm. Especially around sunset, the area really starts to come alive.

For us, this was the perfect place to experience that classic Florida beach vibe: lively, social, and simply fun.

4 – Lynn Hall Memorial Park (Pier)

For iconic beach photos, you should definitely visit the pier at Lynn Hall Memorial Park, located in the heart of Fort Myers Beach. This is without a doubt one of the most recognizable spots in the entire region.

The long wooden pier stretches far into the ocean and creates the perfect subject for photography. Especially during sunrise or sunset, the light here becomes absolutely beautiful. Think silhouettes, reflections, golden tones, and soft pastel skies. It’s also considered one of the most  amazing sunset spots in Florida.

The surroundings are lively, but that is exactly what makes this place so interesting. You can play with movement, people, and different compositions, making it ideal if you want more dynamic images.

Even without a camera, this is still a wonderful place to visit. You can stroll along the pier, watch local fishermen, or simply enjoy the ocean views. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins swimming nearby.

For us, this was the ultimate location for those classic Florida beach shots: iconic, photogenic, and always full of atmosphere.
