2020 is the year in which traveling within our own country became increasingly popular. Of course not due to the best reasons. During the lockdown I also searched for the best places in my small but beautiful country, Belgium. This resulted in a lot of Belgium content on my instagram feed. For every new instagram photo that appeared on my feed, I kept looking for appropriate and strategic hashtags. After all this research I had quite a list. And because there will be a lot of Belgium content the next few months during the second lockdown, and in the future as well because Belgium is a great country to explore, I would like to share the best instagram hashtags for Belgium with you right here.

What are instagram hashtags and how to use them?
Why use instagram hashtags?
If you are active on Instagram, you have probably already noticed that your favorite influencers or content creators use hashtags. You will usually find these in or behind the caption or in the comments below the photo. Those hashtags are not just there, they have a clear function.
Hashtags ensure that your content will be found. You can compare them a bit with the SEO of a blog, but for instagram. When you use hashtags, your content will be categorized under this hashtag. It ensures that people who may not be following you yet will see your photo because they are interested in a certain hashtag. For example, when I travel to a new destination, I immediately look up some relevant hashtags. In this way I get inspiration to create content there, but on the other hand I also discover new instagram profiles that I didn’t know yet.
Besides, it is now also possible to follow hashtags. That way, your content can also end up in the newsfeed of non-followers, because they follow the hashtag you used.
So in that sense, the hashtag not only increases the reach and engagement of your content. If you use hashtags strategically, you will also reach more people within the field of interest of your niche.
How do I use instagram hashtags?
You can add up to 30 instagram hashtags in your post. If use 30 or not is up to you. However, some find 30 hashtags a bit too spammy. A solution to that is that you devide your hashtags. You can choose to include some in the caption, place some behind the caption and post some in a response to your own content. But it’s also possible to collect them all in one place. I’ve read so many different articles about where the best place to put your hashtags would be, but they all contradict each other. I just put my hashtags behind my caption. I guess the place doesn’t really matter but it’s more important to use good hashtags.
How do you find the best hashtag?
Where do I look for hashtags?
I always assume that you use hashtags that tell a bit more about your content and your niche. As a travel blogger, I often use place-related hashtags and hashtags that are linked to travel, such as travel blogger or travel photography hashtags. But how do you find good quality hashtags?
You can use the search function on your instagram account. Then you just enter your subject, like here “Belgium”. Then you hit tags and a whole list of potential hashtags will appear. You can see how many times these hashtags have already been used and this is an important factor in selecting your hashtags.
Another way to find relevant hashtags is to take a peek at your audience. See which hashtags they use or follow.
In addition, it can also be useful to peek which hashtags other influencers with the same niche use.
You also have some apps and online tools that will look for the best hashtag suggestions for you. I have tried a few, but I found the suggestions not always very useful. You can enter these suggestions in the instagram search function to see how they really perform on instagram.
Here are some free tools to look up instagram hashtags:
Which hashtag do I use and which not?
I just mentioned that it’s important to know how many times a hashtag has already been used. The hashtags that are used the most are of course the most popular or trending hashtags. But this is not always a good thing. With hashtags that are used millions of times, it’s more difficult to create visibility for your content. Once you post your content with this hashtag, your content will be flooded with other content that uses that same hashtag. In other words, hashtags used over a million times are lost hahstags.
We can divide the hashtags into different categories:
Very popular hashtags: 300000 – 1 000000 posts
Average popular hashtags: 80 000 – 300 000 posts
Niche specific hashtags: hashtags that tell a bit more about your niche
Personal hashtags: hashtags you make to promote your brand
The intention is that you find a balanced mix between these 4 categories, try not always to go for the hashtags that are used the most. Also, don’t use the same hashtags for every post. Try to vary a bit and check your statistics regularly to see which hashtag combination have the most reach. Keep in mind that hashtags are constantly evolving. A hashtag you used before may not score as well after a few months. It’s important to keep checking whether the hashtag is still suitable for strategic use.
Instagram feature accounts
Feature accounts can also help in expanding your content reach. You can tag up to 20 accounts in your post. I usually tag feature accounts. These are niche accounts that publish content from others. Tagging them allows you to be noticed by their followers. But that is not everything. When these accounts really like your content, they can contact you to ask if they can share your content. This means extra visibility for your content and instagram account. I have marked the hashtags linked to a feature account below with a * and noted the account you can tag next to it.
