Vacation in northern Netherlands: uncover the North’s hidden gems
It is always a pleasure for me to travel to the Netherlands. It is wonderfully close by and always surprising. Whether you’re going for a city break in one of the beautiful cities like Leiden or Rotterdam, a beach holiday in Zeeland, or a romantic weekend getaway, the Netherlands has something for everyone. This time, I went on vacation in the northern Netherlands with two friends, and I’ll take you along to the most hidden gems in this region.

Why do you need to visit the northern Netherlands?
When you think of the northern Netherlands, Friesland often comes to mind first. However, besides Friesland, there are three other beautiful provinces in the north of the Netherlands: Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel. In this blog post, I would like to shine a spotlight on these provinces. Together, they offer a unique combination of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural diversity, making them perfect for a varied and unforgettable vacation in the northern Netherlands.
In Groningen, you will find the vibrant eponymous capital with a lively student scene, historical buildings, and modern architecture. Drenthe is known for its vast heathlands, the history of the Colonies of Benevolence, and picturesque villages, ideal for nature lovers and hikers. Overijssel offers a mix of atmospheric cities like Zwolle and Deventer, beautiful river landscapes, and charming villages. The region is perfect for cycling and hiking tours and cultural excursions.
How to travel to the northern Netherlands?
Traveling to the northern Netherlands is straightforward and offers various options. By car, it is a beautiful drive through the Dutch landscape. Via the highways, you can reach Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel from Belgium in just a few hours. Along the way, you can enjoy scenic views and easily stop at interesting attractions.
The train is a comfortable and environmentally friendly option. From major cities like Brussels and Antwerp, you can easily travel to Rotterdam, Amsterdam, or Schiphol with the Eurostar , where you can transfer to a local train. From there, direct connections to Groningen, Zwolle, and other major cities in the northern Netherlands are available. The Dutch Railways(NS) provide a reliable and swift journey, allowing you to relax and enjoy the landscape along the way.
If you are coming from further away, you can also arrive by plane. The nearest major airport is Groningen Airport Eelde, which receives flights from various European cities. From the airport, you can easily take a rental car or use public transportation to continue your journey to your final destination in the northern Netherlands.
How to get around in the Northern Netherlands?
Getting around in the northern Netherlands is easy and enjoyable. By car, you can travel quickly and flexibly between charming villages and vibrant cities. The roads are excellent and parking is usually not a problem, especially outside the busy city centers.
Public transport is also a great option. The train connections are comfortable and fast, with regular services between major cities. Additionally, buses take you to smaller, hidden spots in the region.
Cycling is a fantastic way to explore the northern Netherlands. The region boasts an extensive network of bike paths that lead you through beautiful landscapes and picturesque villages. Bikes are easy to rent in most cities and tourist areas.
For shorter distances within cities, walking and using electric scooters or bicycles are convenient. This allows you to discover the northern Netherlands in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

1. Groningen
The first stop on our girls’ trip was the city of Groningen. It may not be one of the most famous cities in the Netherlands, but it is definitely one you shouldn’t miss. Groningen is a vibrant university city, which is immediately apparent from the many cyclists you see upon arriving in the city. Besides modern vibrancy, there is also room for historical charm, which makes Groningen so fascinating.
Groningen has something for everyone and is the perfect destination for a girls’ trip. There are plenty of ways to get to know the city: from delightful walks along the old canals, where you find unique boutiques and cozy hotspots, to soaking up culture in one of the many museums. And for an adventurous experience, you can go stand-up paddleboarding on the water. In short, Groningen has everything for an unforgettable time!

The Forum in Groningen is an absolute must-visit! This modern, multifaceted building is buzzing with activities and surprises. Start your visit with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city from the rooftop terrace, perfect for photos and a zen moment. Explore the impressive library, delve into fascinating exhibitions, or enjoy a movie in the cinema. Feeling hungry? The cozy dining spots offer delicious snacks and drinks. Moreover, the Forum regularly hosts events, lectures, and workshops that inspire and surprise. It is the place where culture, knowledge, and relaxation come together. A visit to the Martini Tower in Groningen is an experience not to be missed. This iconic tower, also known as ‘d’Olle Grieze,’ is the tallest building in the city and offers a spectacular view over Groningen and the surrounding region. As you climb the 311 steps, you get a sense of the city’s rich history and impressive heritage.
Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with a panoramic view that is well worth the effort. Order one of the signature cocktails from the menu or tell the bartender what you’re in the mood for, and they’ll happily whip up a custom cocktail for you. This delightfully hidden spot is popular in Groningen, so making a reservation is a must to enjoy the delicious cocktails.
Enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner in the heart of Groningen
Looking for a nice place to eat in the heart of Groningen? Then I can definitely recommend Stadscafé Pronk. This beautiful venue offers a stylish interior and a cozy, heated city terrace that is open every day. So even in less favorable weather, you can enjoy the terrace here. The menu features a variety of dishes, so there is something for everyone. I particularly enjoyed the croquettes!
Enjoy delicious food amidst the beautiful Noorderplantsoen
Looking to relax in a green environment, away from the hustle and bustle of the city? Then visit eetcafé Zondag in the Noorderplantsoen, located in a beautiful park just a five-minute walk from the center of Groningen. Here, you can enjoy a drink, lunch, or dinner. My tip: try the Groninger mustard soup, which is truly finger-licking good. And don’t forget to taste the homemade regional ice cream for dessert—it’s the best in the region
Discover the delicious Nikkei cuisine
Have you ever heard of Nikkei cuisine? It is a unique fusion of Japanese ingredients and techniques with Peruvian flavors. In Groningen, you can experience this at Pacha Mama. Here, they serve delicious, unique Nikkei dishes that you can share with your company. It’s not only super tasty but also very cozy. In short, a culinary experience you will never forget.
Enjoy a sporty nightcap
Just like in the south of France, pétanque is very popular in the Netherlands too. In Groningen, you’ll even find a dedicated jeu de boules bar where you can enjoy a game of pétanque! It’s the ideal ‘sporty’ nightcap after a day full of sightseeing in Groningen. Not a fan of pétanque? No problem, you can also simply enjoy a drink in a cozy setting. In short, a great spot in Groningen.

During a city trip, it’s always nice to stay in the heart of the city. That’s why I recommend choosing accommodation with a good location in Groningen. 2. Frederiksoord in Drenthe
Drenthe is a beautiful region in the Netherlands, perfect for a relaxing holiday. Here, you can enjoy vast nature reserves, historic villages, and a rich culture. A notable highlight is the Colonies of Benevolence, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can learn more about the unique history of these social experiments. Our journey took us to Frederiksoord, the pilot colony founded in 1818. Here, poor people from the city were brought to work and build a better life through agriculture and crafts. This colony played a significant role in the social reforms of that time.
In short, a unique destination that is definitely worth a visit during your holiday in the northern Netherlands.

Prefer cycling? Then choose the Weldadig Rondje and experience the Colonies of Benevolence in a sporty and active way. This route takes you through a unique piece of Dutch history and lets you enjoy beautiful monuments along the way. Visit Hoeve Koning Willem III
A tour of Hoeve Koning Willem III in Frederiksoord is a fun outing for all ages.
