The best La Spezia hotel near the train station
When we arrived at Hotel Firenze Continentale in La Spezia I was immediately charmed by the warm, typical Italian interior of the 1920s with wooden walls and antique decorations. The lobby is divided into several smaller, cozy and antique lounges. My favourite was the one with the globules. For me the perfect spot for daydreaming about more travels to come…
A real Italian mama full of zest for life owns the hotel. You immediately feel that warm, family atmosphere even though this is a quite big hotel.
After reading several of my blog posts you already know that I am always looking for the most authentic places and this hotel is certainly one of them. I haven’t seen more typical Italian than this yet.
Hotel Firenze Continentale is attractive to a wide audience. It offers different types of rooms that vary in size, interior and services. You can choose what fits your personal needs and budget.
There are economy-, comfort-, superior- and deluxe rooms and of course suites. Also family rooms are available and suitable for 4 persons.
All rooms are decorated in the same vintage Italian style like the lobby. They are equipped with elegant furniture and gorgeous fabrics in gold with either red or blue. The rooms are not only beautiful, but also very comfortable and peaceful.
Only the deluxe rooms are different in terms of decoration and style. These have been renovated since 2017 and are located on the top floor. These have a more modern design. Here I especially loved the large walk-in closet and the beautiful view from the terrace overlooking the hills of the Gulf of Poets.
For those who want to enjoy more luxury, the Suites are perfect. These are spacious and include a personal elegant living space, bathroom with bath and a cozy, warm bedroom.
The rooms have a private bathroom with shower; only in the suites there is a bath provided. The bathroom is equipped with supplies and towels. Bathrobes are provided in the Deluxe rooms and suites.
All rooms are well cared for and cleaned every day. They have plenty of closet space, a minibar and a safe. Room service is available for those who would like to relax in the room after a long day of exploring the surroundings.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. The reception is open 24 hours a day and can also be reached by telephone from the room.
Aperitivo at the bar
The lobby on the ground floor is divided in several lounge areas and a bar. The authentic wooden bar is stunning and offers anything you wish for whether it’s a coffee or an aperitivo with some delicious snacks. You can sit at the bar or you can choose to take your drink into one of the lounges. These areas are beautiful decorated and the perfect place to relax for a while.
Breakfast is served every morning on the third floor. There you have a gorgeous panoramic view overlooking the hills of the Gulf of Poets. In the breakfast buffet you can find everything you need to start of your day on the right foot, such as different kinds of bread, pastries, homemade cakes, plenty of choice in toppings, … including healthy options such as yoghurt, fruit, nuts,… . They also have a wide range of local products such as jams and honey from Lunigiana, Val di Vara cheese and typical Ligurian focaccia.
There is a WIFI available throughout the whole hotel.
The hotel is the perfect base to explore La Spezia and the 5 villages of Cinque Terre. The hotel is near the train station where you can take a train at regular intervals, passing by the beautiful villages of Cinque Terre. There you also have good connections to other cities such as Pisa. la Spezia is therefore easily accessible via train from the airport.
The hotel is within walking distance of the centre of La Spezia where you can find many shops, bars, restaurants and much more… In short, everything you need for a succesful holiday. On top of that, you can easily travel to Portevenere by bus, boat or car, which is also worth a visit.
Where to eat in La Spezia?
Unexpectedly we arrived a day earlier in La Spezia on Valentine’s day. We hadn’t time to search the perfect restaurant and make reservations to celebrate this romantic evening. So hungry as we were, we started to go from restaurant to restaurant asking if there was a table available. But everywhere we went it was already fully booked. We had almost given up hope, but in restaurant Locanda Del Mercado there was one more table available. It was karma. We were in the right place at the right time.
Locanda Del Mercado in located in the centre of La Spezia. It is a trendy, but very inviting and warm restaurant. There even was live piano music specially for Valentine’s night. The staff was very friendly and the service impeccable! We started of with a cocktail and tapas. A main course followed and we ended the night with a delicious dessert, because that is allowed on valentine’s day. The food was super tasty. We really enjoyed our Valentine’s evening in Locanda Del Mercado and we would recommend this restaurant to everyone that visits La Spezia.
When you are in La Spezia you should definitely visit La Pia Centenaria. This is a very old pizzaria dating back to 1887. In addition to the best pizza in town you can taste another specialty, namely the farinata.
Things to do in La Spezia
La Spezia is a beautiful city with a vibrant city centre. I immediately fell in love with the orange trees in the streets. You can still admire the stunning architecture from the past strolling alongside the beautiful facades of the townhouses.
In the centre you can spend your time shopping in local stores aswell as in contemporary boutiques, enjoy delicious italian food and drinks in cozy and trendy bars and restaurants or wander around in the authenic harbor. You can also choose to visit the castle where you have a beautiful panorma view overlooking La Spezia.
