Yet, for many travellers, this valley remains a hidden gem. During my visit, I was especially impressed by its peaceful atmosphere, stunning nature, and authentic charm. From scenic hiking trails in Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park to historic mountain villages, there are plenty of things to do in La Vall de Boí. In this guide, I’ll share the most beautiful sights and my favourite places you shouldn’t miss.

About La Vall de Boí

La Vall de Boí is located in the province of Lleida, in northern Catalonia. The valley is best known for its nine Romanesque churches, which together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the gateway to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, one of the most beautiful natural areas in Spain.

But La Vall de Boí has much more to offer. Here, you’ll find charming mountain villages, spectacular hiking trails, and impressive mountain landscapes. Each village has its own character and history.

What I loved most was the combination of nature and cultural heritage. One moment, you’re walking from a centuries-old church to a panoramic mountain trail, and the next, you’re enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of a charming village square. It’s this variety that makes the valley so special.

Whether you love hiking, photography, or discovering local culture, there’s something for everyone here. La Vall de Boí is without a doubt a hidden gem you shouldn’t miss.

How to travel to La Vall de Boí?

La Vall de Boí is located in the province of Lleida, in the Catalan Pyrenees, about a three-hour drive from Barcelona.

Travelling from Belgium by plane? The easiest option is to fly from Brussels Airport to Barcelona-El Prat Airport. During the summer season, you can also fly directly from Brussels South Charleroi Airport to Reus Airport. Both airports are excellent starting points for a road trip through Catalonia.

Renting a car is by far the easiest way to reach La Vall de Boí. From Barcelona, the drive takes around three hours, while from Reus it takes about two and a half hours. Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful landscapes and charming villages.

Prefer travelling by public transport? Take the train to Lleida and continue by bus to La Vall de Boí. Keep in mind that connections are limited, so make sure to check the timetable in advance.

If you’re staying in one of the villages in the valley, getting around by car is the easiest option. Most sights and hiking trails have plenty of parking available.

How much time do you need to visit La Vall de Boí?

It’s best to spend at least two to three days in La Vall de Boí. This gives you enough time to explore the charming mountain villages, visit several Romanesque churches, and enjoy the impressive natural scenery. Make sure to reserve a full day for Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.

Only have one day? You can still discover some of the main highlights. Stroll through Taüll and Boí, visit a few UNESCO-listed churches, and enjoy the beautiful mountain views. It’s a great introduction to the valley.

Have more time? Staying four days or longer is definitely worth it. Explore additional hiking trails, visit smaller villages, and discover hidden gems beyond the main sights. A slower pace allows you to experience the valley at its best and fully enjoy its unique mix of nature, history, and authentic mountain atmosphere.

During my visit, I stayed at Hotel Manantial, a comfortable four-star hotel in Caldes de Boí. The rooms are fairly simple, but the hotel features an extensive thermal spa and wellness facilities and is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Its peaceful location makes it a great base for exploring the valley and the national park.

Looking for a smaller boutique hotel? Hotel Cotori in El Pont de Suert is an excellent choice. This charming hotel combines a warm atmosphere with a convenient location for exploring the valley.

Prefer a little more luxury and extra facilities? Aparthotel Siente Boí & SPA is a great option. Its spacious apartments and wellness facilities make it the perfect place to relax after a day of hiking in the mountains.

1 – Visit the UNESCO-listed Romanesque churches

La Vall de Boí is world-famous for its exceptional collection of Romanesque churches. The valley is home to eight churches and one chapel dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, which together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to their remarkable architecture and excellent state of preservation, they are among the finest examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture.

Sant Climent de Taüll

Sant Climent de Taüll is without a doubt the most famous church in the valley. Its slender bell tower has become a symbol of La Vall de Boí. Inside, don’t miss the impressive mapping experience. A spectacular light projection digitally brings the original medieval frescoes back to life, giving you a unique impression of what the church looked like almost 900 years ago.

Santa Maria de Taüll

Just a short walk from Sant Climent, you’ll find Santa Maria de Taüll. This church was also consecrated in 1123 and is known for its elegant Romanesque architecture. It originally featured beautiful frescoes as well, the originals of which are now preserved at the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona.

Sant Joan de Boí

Sant Joan de Boí is the oldest church in the valley and stands out for its simple appearance and distinctive bell tower. Inside, you can admire reproductions of colourful wall paintings that give you a good idea of the church’s original decoration.

Santa Eulàlia d’Erill la Vall

Santa Eulàlia d’Erill la Vall immediately catches the eye with its elegant six-storey bell tower, one of the most beautiful in the Catalan Pyrenees. Inside, you can admire a beautiful wooden crucifix and learn more about the religious history of the region.

The UNESCO World Heritage collection also includes Sant Feliu de Barruera, La Nativitat de Durro, Santa Maria de Cardet, L’Assumpció de Cóll, and the hermitage of Sant Quirc de Durro. These smaller churches are just as charming and are all located in authentic mountain villages. Together, they form a unique ensemble that showcases the richness of Catalan Romanesque architecture.

Tip: Buy a combined ticket if you plan to visit several churches. It’s a more affordable way to discover the UNESCO heritage of La Vall de Boí.

2 – Explore Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park

A visit to La Vall de Boí wouldn’t be complete without exploring Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. It is the only national park in Catalonia and a true paradise for nature lovers. Expect crystal-clear mountain lakes, waterfalls, flowing rivers, vast wetlands, and mountain peaks rising over 3,000 metres.

The park offers dozens of hiking trails suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular views, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot marmots, chamois, or birds of prey.

One of the most popular hikes leads to Estany Llong, taking you through forests, along rivers, and across mountain meadows. Planell d’Aigüestortes is another beautiful spot. This flat area is perfect for an easy walk and offers stunning views. Looking for more of a challenge? Hike from the Cavallers reservoir to Estany Negre, passing impressive granite rocks and several mountain lakes along the way.

Short on time or prefer not to hike too far? There’s still plenty to see. Several viewpoints throughout the park offer impressive views of the surrounding mountains. Don’t forget your camera, as this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the Catalan Pyrenees.

3 – Wander through charming Taüll

Of all the villages in La Vall de Boí, Taüll was without a doubt my favourite. As soon as you enter the village, you can feel its authentic atmosphere. Narrow streets, centuries-old stone houses, and impressive mountain peaks create the perfect setting.

I loved simply wandering through the streets without a plan. Around every corner, there’s another beautiful view or charming little square waiting to be discovered. Make sure to stop at one of the cosy terraces too. With views of the Pyrenees, it’s the perfect place to take a break.

Taüll is also home to Sant Climent de Taüll, the most famous Romanesque church in the valley. Don’t miss the impressive mapping experience, which digitally brings the original frescoes back to life.

My tip? Visit Taüll early in the morning or later in the evening, when the village is wonderfully peaceful and you can fully enjoy its unique atmosphere. For me, it was without a doubt the most photogenic village in the entire valley.

4 – Visit authentic Durro

Durro is one of the most beautiful mountain villages in La Vall de Boí. It is even officially listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. What stood out to me most during my visit was its peaceful atmosphere. Here, daily life still seems to move at its own pace.

Wander through the narrow streets and admire the traditional stone houses with wooden balconies. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The UNESCO-listed church of La Nativitat de Durro is also well worth a visit.

Still have some energy left? Take the 20-minute walk to the hermitage of Sant Quirc de Durro. The climb is short but definitely worth it. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful panoramas in the entire valley. For me, this was one of the best viewpoints in La Vall de Boí.

5 – Relax in the thermal baths of Caldes de Boí

After a day of hiking, there’s no better place to relax than Caldes de Boí. This small spa resort is nestled in the mountains, about a ten-minute drive from Taüll. Visitors have been coming here to enjoy its mineral-rich spring water since Roman times.

Caldes de Boí is home to no fewer than 37 natural thermal springs, with temperatures ranging from 4 to 56°C. The water is known for its high mineral content and has been used for relaxation and wellness for centuries.

You can visit the spa at Hotel Manantial, even if you’re not staying at the hotel. There are several indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, steam bath, and relaxation areas. From the wellness area, you can also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

I stayed at Hotel Manantial myself and loved unwinding in the spa after a long day of hiking. The warm thermal water and peaceful mountain setting made it the perfect way to end the day. If you’re spending a few days in La Vall de Boí, a visit to Caldes de Boí is definitely worth it.

6 – Put on your hiking boots

Love hiking? Then La Vall de Boí is the perfect place for you. Throughout the valley, you’ll find hiking trails for all levels, ranging from short, easy walks to challenging mountain hikes.

Many trails start directly from the villages or at the entrances to the national park. Along the way, you’ll pass mountain lakes, waterfalls, forests, and green alpine meadows. Other routes take you higher into the mountains, towards rugged peaks and spectacular viewpoints.

For an easy walk, Planell d’Aigüestortes is a great choice. Want to hike a little longer? Try the route to Estany Llong. More experienced hikers can head from Cavallers towards Estany Negre.

There are also plenty of beautiful hiking opportunities outside the national park. For example, you can walk between several villages along old trails, combining nature with the valley’s rich cultural heritage.

For me, hiking was one of the best ways to explore the region. You experience the landscape much more intensely and discover plenty of beautiful photography spots along the way.

Besides hiking, you can also go trail running, mountain biking, and climbing. Keep an eye out for wildlife too, as the mountains are home to chamois, marmots, and several species of birds of prey.

7 – Take a road trip through the mountains

Even if you’re not into long hikes, La Vall de Boí is still well worth visiting. Simply driving through the valley is an experience in itself. Winding mountain roads take you past charming villages, forests, rivers, and impressive mountain peaks.

I loved driving around without rushing. New views appear around every corner, so stop regularly at viewpoints or parking areas to enjoy the scenery. The roads towards Taüll, Durro, and Caldes de Boí are especially beautiful.

Make sure to drive to the Cavallers reservoir as well. This mountain lake lies above Caldes de Boí, on the edge of the national park. The road winds deeper into the mountains until you’re rewarded with spectacular views of turquoise water surrounded by rugged peaks.

You can park at Cavallers and take a short walk along the reservoir. It’s also the starting point for several longer mountain hikes, including the route to Estany Negre.

My tip? Don’t plan every stop in advance. For me, the unexpected viewpoints along the way were what made driving through La Vall de Boí so much fun.

8 – Enjoy the views at Boí Taüll Resort

High above the valley, at an altitude of around 2,000 metres, you’ll find Boí Taüll Resort. In winter, it transforms into one of the highest ski resorts in the Pyrenees. But it’s also well worth visiting outside the ski season.

During the warmer months, you can go hiking, mountain biking, and simply enjoy the mountain scenery. Thanks to its high altitude, you’ll be treated to beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valley.

Even if you’re not planning a long hike, I recommend driving up. The road towards Pla de l’Ermita and the ski resort is already worth the trip. Once you reach the top, the landscape immediately feels wilder and more expansive.

Looking for something more active? Several hiking and mountain biking trails start in the area, making it easy to combine your visit with a few hours in nature.

In winter, you can of course go skiing and snowboarding. The ski area reaches over 2,700 metres and is known for its reliable snow conditions. Thanks to the altitude, you can also enjoy spectacular views of the Pyrenees while skiing.

9 – Admire the starry sky

La Vall de Boí isn’t only impressive during the day. Once the sun goes down, there’s still plenty to discover. The valley is officially recognised as a Starlight Destination, meaning it offers excellent conditions for stargazing.

Thanks to its remote location, there is very little light pollution. On clear nights, you can see thousands of stars with the naked eye and even spot the Milky Way when conditions are right.

I loved simply stepping outside in the evening and looking up at the sky. You don’t need to book a special excursion for this. Just find a dark spot away from the villages and give your eyes some time to adjust. Higher up in the mountains, the night sky is especially spectacular.

Love photography? Make sure to bring your tripod. Thanks to its dark skies, La Vall de Boí is a fantastic destination for astrophotography. Combine the stars with the silhouettes of the Pyrenees for an even more impressive shot.

10 – Experience the fire tradition of Las Falles

Travelling to La Vall de Boí in June or July? Then make sure to experience a Las Falles celebration. For me, this was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip.

This centuries-old fire tradition is celebrated in several villages throughout the valley, including Taüll, Boí, Durro, Barruera, and Erill la Vall. Each village holds its own celebration on a different date.

The spectacle begins as evening falls. The fallaires first make their way up the mountain carrying wooden torches. Once darkness sets in, they light them and descend together towards the village.

Watching it from below was truly impressive. Slowly, a winding trail of lights appears against the dark mountainside. The closer the fallaires get, the more intense the atmosphere becomes. Once they reach the village, the celebrations continue with music and dancing.

Las Falles is closely connected to the arrival of summer. Within the tradition, fire symbolises protection and purification. Since 2015, the festival has been recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Make sure to check in advance when each village celebrates its Falles. That way, you can plan your stay around this unique tradition.

11 – Taste the local cuisine of the Pyrenees

A trip to La Vall de Boí wouldn’t be complete without discovering the local cuisine. The food is simple, hearty, and perfectly suited to life in the mountains. Many restaurants also use local and seasonal ingredients.

On the menu, you’ll often find grilled lamb, local cheeses, and a variety of cured meats. Wild mushrooms are also popular when in season. And after a long day of hiking, a traditional mountain stew tastes even better.

What I loved most is how food is truly part of the experience here. You’ll find several cosy restaurants in villages such as Taüll, Boí, and Barruera, often serving local dishes in an authentic, rustic setting.

Make sure to save some room for dessert. Crema catalana is always a good idea. With its creamy custard and crunchy caramelised sugar topping, it’s the perfect way to end your day.

What to do in La Vall de Boí in one day?

Only have one day in La Vall de Boí? You can still experience quite a few highlights. Start your day in Taüll with a visit to Sant Climent de Taüll. Afterwards, wander through the village and enjoy the peaceful morning atmosphere.

Then head towards Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park and spend a few hours exploring its beautiful nature. You can walk through Planell d’Aigüestortes or, if you have more time, continue towards Estany Llong.

End your day in Durro. Explore the small mountain village before walking up to Sant Quirc de Durro. Try to arrive around sunset, when the views over the valley are at their most beautiful.

This itinerary allows you to experience some of the best things to do in La Vall de Boí in just one day, combining culture, authentic mountain villages, and spectacular nature. Still, I recommend staying longer if you have the time, as the valley is best explored at a slower pace.
