Surrounded by historic buildings and cozy cafés, this square is the perfect place to experience the charm of Veurne. Every Wednesday morning, the market comes to life with colorful stalls full of fresh vegetables, fruits, artisanal cheeses, and flowers, directly from local farmers and traders. It’s an ideal opportunity to taste the authentic flavors and aromas of the region.
The square also serves as the backdrop for numerous cultural events, such as music performances, art exhibitions, and the annual Procession of Penitents. These activities beautifully bring local traditions and community spirit to life.
The Town and Bailiff’s House of Veurne
The Town and Bailiff’s House, built between 1596 and 1612, is a stunning example of Flemish Renaissance style.
Originally, the Town Hall served as the concierge’s office of the Bailiff’s House, while the Albert Hall in the Town Hall served as the headquarters of King Albert I during World War I. The Bailiff’s House was the administrative seat of Veurne-Ambacht (a regional district) and, after the French Revolution and the abolition of the district administration, became a courthouse. Both buildings are free to visit and open daily during the summer holidays.

The Bailiff’s House currently hosts a temporary exhibition of Veurne’s Flemish Master Vigor Boucquet, in honor of 400 years of the Bailiff’s House.

The Belfry of Veurne
The Belfry of Veurne is a Gothic masterpiece from the 15th century, located on the Grand Market Square. This belfry, which is part of the Renaissance Bailiff’s House, was once the center of municipal freedom and administration. The Belfry has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Unfortunately, the Belfry is not open to visitors, but you can still admire its beautiful tower from the outside.
Saint Walburga Church
The current Saint Walburga Church was built in the late 13th century on the site of a church that had stood there since the 9th century. Although the construction of the west tower began at that time, it was never completed. The tower served as a gunpowder storage for a time and was later converted into a rainwater reservoir. At the beginning of the 20th century, the church was finally completed with the addition of side aisles and a short nave.
Inside, you will find a breathtaking interior. The church is famous for its Baroque high altar and beautiful stained-glass windows. You can also admire a Flemish Renaissance choir stall from 1596 and a collection of artworks from the 16th to the 18th century.
This church is not only a place of historical significance but also an active center for religious and social activities.
Don’t miss the statue of Flemish singer Will Tura, which stands next to the church.
Saint Nicholas Church and Tower

This 4.6 km walking route takes you past Veurne’s most famous sights and brings you to places that have a special connection with Delvaux.
