Where to stay in Istanbul: the best neighborhoods and hotels

Sultanahmet: stay close to Istanbul’s most famous sights

Visiting Istanbul for the first time and want to see as many of its famous sights as possible? Then Sultanahmet is an excellent place to stay. You’ll be right in the historic heart of the city, with highlights such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern all within walking distance.

This is especially convenient if you only have a few days in Istanbul. You won’t lose much time getting around and can head out early in the morning before the biggest crowds arrive. There’s no shortage of hotels either, ranging from affordable places to beautiful boutique hotels with views across the city.

The only downside? Sultanahmet is quite touristy, and once the main attractions close, the area becomes much quieter. If you prefer spending your evenings surrounded by cozy restaurants, trendy bars and lively streets, Karaköy or Galata might be a better fit.

Karaköy: trendy, lively and super central

Want to stay centrally located without being right in the most touristy part of Istanbul? Then Karaköy is one of the best areas to consider. Once a port district, today it’s a lively neighborhood filled with cozy coffee shops, great restaurants, boutiques and stylish hotels.

The location is excellent too. The tram will take you to Sultanahmet in no time, while on foot you can cross Galata Bridge or walk towards the Galata Tower and İstiklal Avenue. Ferries also depart from Karaköy to different parts of Istanbul, making it easy to explore even more of the city.

Because of the neighborhood’s popularity, prices can sometimes be a little higher, especially at the trendier boutique hotels. But if you like to combine sightseeing with great food, lively evenings and a vibrant atmosphere, Karaköy is definitely worth considering.

Galata: atmospheric, charming and photogenic

For charming streets, historic façades and beautiful views, Galata is the place to be. The famous Galata Tower forms the heart of this atmospheric neighborhood, but it’s really the little streets surrounding it that make Galata so special. You’ll find cozy cafés, restaurants, boutiques and rooftop bars where you can enjoy a drink with views over Istanbul.

The location is another big advantage. You can easily walk to Karaköy and İstiklal Avenue and continue exploring the city from there. And if, like me, you love photography, Galata is also a wonderful neighborhood to simply wander around without a plan. There seems to be a beautiful street scene waiting around almost every corner.

Just keep in mind that there are quite a few hills. Istanbul isn’t a flat city to begin with, but some of Galata’s streets can be particularly steep. So be sure to check the exact location of your hotel if you don’t fancy a serious uphill walk every evening.

Kadıköy: lively, local and often more affordable

Want to experience a completely different side of Istanbul? Cross the Bosphorus to Kadıköy on the Asian side of the city. Here, the main attraction isn’t grand monuments but local life itself. Think colorful markets, bustling shopping streets, cozy coffee shops and, above all, lots of excellent restaurants.

Kadıköy is therefore a great choice for foodies and travelers who enjoy venturing beyond the classic tourist spots. Accommodation prices are also often a little lower here than in popular neighborhoods on the European side, meaning you can sometimes get more value for your money.

You will, of course, be further away from the main historic sights. Fortunately, ferries and the Marmaray make it easy to reach the other side. And that’s hardly a downside: taking the ferry across the Bosphorus with views of Istanbul’s skyline is an experience in itself.

13 – Dekalb Hotel

Want to experience the lively Asian side of Istanbul during your stay? Then Dekalb Hotel Istanbul is a stylish place to stay in the heart of Kadıköy. You’ll be surrounded by cozy cafés, restaurants and shops, while the ferry terminal is within walking distance, making it easy to cross over to the European side of the city.

The hotel has a modern boutique feel, with warm colors, eye-catching details and comfortable contemporary rooms. Despite its central location, it still feels pleasantly intimate.
