My latest trip inspired me to create a complete Tunisia itinerary, highlighting all the must-see spots. Tunisia is filled with hidden treasures and unique experiences, and I can’t wait for you to discover this beautiful country for yourself!

About Tunisia

Tunisia is a surprisingly diverse country, though some misconceptions can sometimes overshadow its magic.

Many people assume Tunisia is mostly desert. Of course, the Sahara is an impressive part of the south, but Tunisia offers so much more: from wide beaches and lush oases to rugged mountains and even forests in the north. Each region has its own charm, making the variety of landscapes truly remarkable.

Tunisia is also often seen solely as a beach destination. The coast is beautiful, but this country has so much more to offer! Think of ancient ruins in Carthage and Dougga, or the vibrant medinas filled with colorful markets and artisan shops. Tunisia blends culture, history, and nature like no other. And for adventurers, there are desert tours in Douz and Tataouine that let you experience true desert life.

Many people think Tunisia is unsafe, but that perception is truly inaccurate. Tunisia is actually a safe and welcoming country to travel through, with excellent tourist facilities and incredibly friendly locals. I’ve always felt at ease here and never experienced a moment of insecurity!

And finally, the Tunisian cuisine! Many assume it’s all simple, spicy dishes, mostly couscous with a generous scoop of harissa. But nothing could be further from the truth! Tunisian cuisine is incredibly diverse and full of rich flavors, with wonderful influences from Arabic, Berber, French, and Mediterranean traditions.

The ultimate Tunisia road trip itinerary

To experience Tunisia’s diversity, a road trip is the ideal approach. Based on my own travels and experiences in Tunisia, I mapped out a Tunisia itinerary that highlights the country’s most beautiful spots. Want to see everything? You’ll need around 20 days. Of course, you can adapt the route to your preferences: shorten it or split it into two trips at different times. For instance, you could tour the best sights along the north and east coasts and take a separate trip to southern Tunisia. Use this Tunisia itineray primarily as inspiration!

The easiest way to travel around Tunisia is by rental car . This gives you flexibility and allows you to visit several places in a day. Public transport is also an option, though it requires a bit more planning and time.

Northern Tunisia

Start your Tunisia adventure in diverse Northern Tunisia! This region along the Mediterranean coast offers a unique mix of vibrant cities, historical treasures, and beautiful nature. The capital, Tunis, is the cultural heart of the region, featuring the atmospheric medina and the renowned Bardo Museum. Nearby, you’ll find other highlights, such as the ruins of Carthage and the charming coastal town of Sidi Bou Saïd, known for its blue and white architecture.

A bit farther, you’ll discover the impressive Roman ruins of Dougga and the idyllic beaches along the coast of Bizerte. Hammamet, with its relaxed atmosphere and lovely coastline, is also a popular destination.

Plan at least four days to explore this beautiful region. Choose a central base like Tunis. For an authentic experience, stay in a traditional dar in the medina, such as Dar Dorra or Dar el Médina. Prefer staying closer to the airport? Mövenpick Hotel du Lac is ideal.

The charming village of Sidi Bou Saïd is another excellent base. Here, you can stay at La Demeure, a boutique accommodation with elegant suites and stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea.

Day 1 – Tunis 

Begin your journey in Tunis by exploring the enchanting medina, a lively maze of narrow streets, colorful markets, and artisan shops. Here, you’ll be immersed in a world of scents, colors, and sounds. Wander through atmospheric souks like the Souk des Parfumeurs and Souk des Étoffes, where you’ll find unique perfumes, fabrics, and jewelry. Prefer not to miss hidden spots? Opt for a guided tour with a local guide!

Don’t miss the beautiful Zitouna Mosque, the city’s spiritual heart, with its impressive courtyard and refined architecture. Through the historic Bab el Bhar gate, you’ll enter the modern city, where Avenue Habib Bourguiba welcomes you with shops, cafés, and elegant colonial buildings. Perfect for shopping and relaxing.

History enthusiast? The Bardo Museum, with its stunning collection of Roman mosaics, is a must. Architecture lovers will appreciate the neo-Romanesque Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul and the Ottoman Sidi Mahrez Mosque.

Day 2 – Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd

On the second day, explore the unique sites around Tunis. The ruins of Carthage and charming Sidi Bou Saïd are only a 20-minute drive away, ideal for a day trip. You can join a tour that combines Carthage with the medina of Tunis and picturesque Sidi Bou Saïd, or explore independently.

Carthage

Start your day at the impressive ruins of Carthage, an ancient Phoenician city-state founded in 814 BC. Carthage was once a thriving center of trade and culture until its destruction by Rome in 146 BC. Later rebuilt as a Roman colony, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site with fascinating landmarks.

Begin at the imposing Antonine Baths. Even as ruins, this enormous bathhouse radiates Roman grandeur. Continue to the mystical Tophet of Carthage, the sanctuary of Baal and Tanit, surrounded by ancient urns and stone tablets.

Next, visit the Carthage Amphitheater, once holding 30,000 spectators and still used for concerts today. On Byrsa Hill, once the political heart of Carthage, you’ll find the Carthage Museum and Saint Louis Cathedral, both offering stunning views.

Explore the ancient Punic ports, the proud center of Carthage’s maritime power. End your day with the Roman villas and marvel at the colorful mosaics. Each visit reveals a glimpse of Carthage’s glory and rich history.

Sidi Bou Said 

After a morning of culture in Carthage, unwind in the iconic Sidi Bou Saïd. This charming blue-and-white village, with bright blue doors and balconies on white facades, feels like a living painting. Set on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean, it has attracted artists and writers for centuries.

Wander through the scenic streets and visit Rue Hedi Zarrouk for unique souvenirs. Here, you’ll find art galleries, artisan shops, and cozy cafés. Treat yourself to a fresh bambalouni, a local sweet treat, and enjoy mint tea at Café des Délices with sea views.

Want more culture? Visit Dar el Annabi, a traditional Tunisian house filled with antiques and colorful tiles. Then continue to Ennejma Ezzahra, the beautiful Baron’s Palace, now a music museum with views over the bay.

End your day at the picturesque harbor for a relaxing walk, a boat ride, or a beautiful sunset.

Day 3 – Dougga 

On day 3, head inland to the fascinating Dougga, a beautifully preserved Roman city about a two-hour drive from Tunis. Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-see and is considered one of Tunisia’s most stunning historical sites. Prefer not to plan the details yourself? Opt for a tour to Dougga, often combined with a visit to the ruins of Bulla Regia.

In Dougga, you step straight into ancient history. Begin at the impressive Capitol, an iconic temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. The tall columns and refined architecture immediately take you back to the grandeur of Roman times.

Next, explore the theater, which once held 3,500 spectators and offers a beautiful view over the surrounding valley. The Punic Mausoleum, a unique blend of Punic and Greek styles, and the Temple of Saturn, built on ancient Punic foundations, are also must-sees.

Stroll through the forum, once the political heart of Dougga, and visit the Licinian Baths to get a feel for ancient bathing culture. Finish at the Temple of Caelestis, where Roman and African influences merge beautifully.

Still hungry for culture? Drive another hour to Bulla Regia, known for its unique underground villas with stunning mosaics. Here, you’ll also find a theater, bathhouses, temples, and an impressive forum.

Day 4 – A relaxing day on the coast

After three days of culture, it’s time to unwind, and what better way than a beach day? Around Tunis, you’ll find plenty of spots for a perfect day by the sea. In the city itself, La Marsa beach offers soft sand, local food stalls, and cozy cafés. Just a 20-minute drive from the center, it’s ideal for a relaxing day without a long journey.

Up for a slightly longer drive? The coast of Bizerte, an hour north, has stunning beaches. Ghar El Melh is perfect for those seeking tranquility, with clear water and a peaceful atmosphere. Bizerte’s Corniche Beach is also a popular spot for a delightful day by the sea.

Prefer heading south? In the beach town of Hammamet, also an hour away, you’ll find the long sandy beaches and azure waters of Yasmine Hammamet and Hammamet Plage. Here, you can relax on lounge chairs, enjoy nearby restaurants, or try water sports.

Near Tunis, the small beaches of Sidi Bou Saïd and Kram offer a quiet, accessible escape. Whether you stay close by or take a mini-road trip, there are plenty of options around Tunis for a relaxing beach day!

The East Coast of Tunisia

Traveling along Tunisia’s east coast brings you to stunning places you won’t want to miss. Start in Sousse, with its UNESCO-listed medina, filled with winding streets and historical charm. Next, visit the seaside town of Monastir, famous for its fortress and beautiful beaches. Further south lies the impressive El Djem, where the iconic Roman amphitheater takes you back in time. A bit inland, you’ll discover Kairouan, Tunisia’s spiritual heart, with ancient mosques and charming streets.

Plan to spend 3 to 4 days exploring this region. In Sousse, stay in the medina at Dar Badiaa or Dar Antonia for an authentic experience, or opt for the luxurious Jaz Tour Khalef beach resort.

In Monastir, consider the charming Dar Benti or the Iberostar Selection Kuriat Palace resort.

For a unique experience, spend a night at the beautiful Dar Alouini in the medina of Kairouan.

Day 5 – Sousse

Explore Sousse, a lively city filled with culture, history, and stunning beaches. Begin in the medina, a maze of narrow streets and colorful markets. Experience the authentic atmosphere of Tunisia, browse artisan shops, and taste local dishes. Want a guided experience? Opt for a tour with a local guide. In need of a break? Stop by Café Kasbah or the charming Le Petit Café Maure for tea or coffee.

Then, visit the Ribat of Sousse, an 8th-century fortress with rich history. Climb the tower for fantastic views over the city and the Mediterranean. Within walking distance lies the Great Mosque, with a serene courtyard showcasing early Islamic architecture.

The Archaeological Museum, located in the old Kasbah, displays beautiful Roman mosaics and offers a glimpse into ancient Tunisia.

After soaking in the culture, it’s time to relax. Boujaffar Beach is ideal for sun, sea, and watersports. End your day with a walk along the Corniche or a dinner in the charming marina of Port El Kantaoui. Enjoy the sunset and lively atmosphere—the perfect close to your day in Sousse!

Day 6 – Monastir

On day 6, dive into the history of Monastir. Start at the iconic Ribat of Monastir, one of North Africa’s oldest and best-preserved forts. From the tower, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the city and sea, the perfect spot to imagine scenes from The Life of Brian, filmed here.

Next, visit the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, with its golden domes and stunning marble. This impressive tribute to Tunisia’s first president is a true highlight. Wander through Monastir’s medina, exploring narrow streets with colorful markets and cozy cafés. Opt for a tour with a local guide for the best experience.

Just outside Monastir, Fort El Ksar offers insights into the old defense system and sea views.

Need some relaxation? Monastir Beach, with clear water and peaceful spots, is perfect for an afternoon of sun. Skanes Beach, nearby with its wide sandy stretches, is ideal for sunbathers. For a more vibrant scene, head to Marina Beach, filled with beach huts and cafés.

End your day at the modern marina, perfect for lunch, shopping, and admiring the yachts.

Day 7 – Kairouan

Kairouan is a must-see on your Tunisia trip! This city, one of the oldest and holiest in the country, is steeped in culture and history and proudly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Begin at the Great Mosque of Kairouan, founded in the 7th century. With its expansive courtyard, beautiful arches, and impressive prayer hall, it’s an architectural marvel. Ensure shoulders and knees are covered, and women should cover their hair.

Nearby is the Barber’s Mosque, built in honor of a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Its serene atmosphere and colorful tiles make it a beautiful place for reflection. Then, visit the Aghlabid Basins, ancient water reservoirs that showcase the engineering feats that once provided water to Kairouan.

In the medina, explore craft shops and markets filled with handmade carpets, jewelry, and ceramics. Stop by the Governor’s House for a rooftop view over Kairouan.

Complete your day with a cooking workshop at Makroudh Experience, where you’ll learn to make traditional date pastries!

For more culture, visit the stunning Sidi Sahbi Mausoleum, where beautiful mosaic tiles and elegant courtyards create a magical setting. If you’re in the mood for more exploration, the Museum of Islamic Art offers a delightful collection of ceramics and textiles, giving you a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

Day 8 – El Djem

On day 8, visit the impressive amphitheater of El Djem, a true must-see! From Sousse or Kairouan, it’s about an hour’s drive. This 3rd-century amphitheater, the third-largest in the world, once held 35,000 spectators. Climb the stands for a fantastic view of the arena, or wander through the underground passages where gladiators prepared. Here, you can feel the atmosphere of Roman times.

Then, head to the El Djem Museum, where you’ll find beautiful mosaics and historical artifacts. The mosaics depict mythological scenes, animals, and Roman daily life. The museum itself is built on the foundation of an ancient Roman villa, making the experience even more special.

Next to the museum, you can admire a reconstructed Roman villa, complete with stunning mosaic floors, courtyards, and decorations—a glimpse into the luxurious life of the Roman elite.

A visit to El Djem takes about half a day. Afterward, you can continue traveling south. The drive takes several hours (4 to 5), so bring drinks and snacks for the journey.

Southern Tunisia

A road trip through southern Tunisia is a must for your journey. This enchanting region, with vast Sahara dunes, atmospheric oases, and ancient traditions, attracts adventurers and culture enthusiasts from all over the world. For movie fans, it’s especially exciting—many scenes from Star Wars were filmed here!

Since the sights are far apart, it’s helpful to stay in different places. Start with three days in Tozeur, where you can stay at the charming Dar Tozeur or the luxurious Anantara Tozeur Resort.

Spending a night in the Sahara at Camp Mars is a unique experience you won’t want to miss.

End your adventure with two days in Tataouine, where you can truly experience the local atmosphere! Stay at the cozy Dar Ettawfik, an authentic vacation apartment, or choose a room at Tataouineranch. There’s no luxury here, but plenty of local charm and hospitality.

Day 9 – Tozeur

In Tozeur, start your adventure in the old medina, Ouled El Hadef. This charming maze of narrow streets and historic homes, built with yellow-brown bricks in unique patterns, captures the atmosphere of the past. Here, you can find beautiful local souvenirs. Take a break at the rooftop café Berbère and enjoy the beautiful view over the medina.

Escape the heat in the lush Tozeur oasis, where more than 200,000 palm trees provide cool shade. Enjoy a relaxing walk, rent a bike, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride.

End your day at the Dar Cheraït Museum, which offers insights into the culture of southern Tunisia. The atmospheric rooms, filled with furniture and art, showcase Tunisian traditions. A special section dedicated to The Thousand and One Nights makes your visit even more magical.

Day 10 – Discover the Star Wars sites around Tozeur

On day 10, explore the iconic Star Wars locations around Tozeur. The region, filled with adventure and breathtaking landscapes, attracts adventurers and Star Wars fans from around the world. Here, you can visit Mos Espa, the famous city of Tatooine. Walking among the sand-colored houses and strange machines, you’ll feel like you’re on Tatooine. This well-preserved film set is a must-see for every fan.

From Mos Espa, head further into the desert to Ong Jemel, a striking rock formation resembling a camel’s neck. The view over the vast Sahara is breathtaking. Ong Jemel is a popular destination for 4×4 tours, where you can experience the immense beauty of the desert landscape in perfect silence.

Day 11 – Follow the ancient Sahara trade route and discover stunning oases

Tozeur was once a bustling trade center on the Sahara route between Carthage and Algeria. Follow this old caravan route toward Algeria, and you’ll discover three enchanting mountain oases: Chebika, Tamerza, and Midès.

Chebika, known as the “sun of the mountains,” was once a Roman lookout point. In this oasis, you can hike among high cliffs and enjoy stunning waterfalls and crystal-clear pools. The views over the surrounding mountains and the Sahara are breathtaking, making it an ideal spot for adventurous walks.

Tamerza is the largest oasis of the three and is known for its lush palm groves and flowing water. Here, you’ll find the abandoned ruins of an old village, deserted after a severe flood in 1969. The contrast between the green oasis and the barren surrounding mountains makes Tamerza unique and atmospheric.

Midès, near the Algerian border, surprises with deep gorges and natural bridges. These narrow canyons, carved by ancient rivers, offer spectacular views over the valley. The landscape feels almost otherworldly and is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.

Day 12 – Sahara adventure

On day 12, head to Douz, known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” You’ll drive across the surreal Chott el Jerid, Tunisia’s largest salt flat. Its shimmering white landscape is perfect for magical photos, especially during the golden hour. Be cautious where you stop, as the ground can be treacherous.

Once in Douz, your true Sahara experience begins. Several camps offer transport from Douz into the desert. I chose Camp Mars, located in the heart of Jebil National Park. After a bumpy two-hour drive through vast desert landscapes, you’ll arrive at Camp Mars, surrounded by orange dunes and the majestic Tembaïne Mountain, meaning “the mountain seen from afar.”

In the afternoon, choose from excursions offered by Camp Mars, from camel rides to jeep safaris. Something for everyone. Back at Camp Mars, enjoy luxury glamping tents with real beds and a small bathroom with a toilet and sink.

After a spectacular sunset, gather around the campfire. Traditional bread is baked on coals in the sand, and you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner with live cooking. The evening ends magically with music, singing, and the release of lanterns under the starry sky.

Day 13 – Matmata

After a delicious local breakfast at Camp Mars, hop back into the jeep for the return journey to Douz. From Douz, travel to the unique village of Matmata, about an hour and a half away. This fascinating village, famous for its cave dwellings, has been a sanctuary for the Berber people for centuries. Step into an entirely different world, with underground homes that offer a glimpse into traditional Berber life.

In Matmata, you’ll admire these ingenious homes, carved out to keep the desert heat at bay, as well as the vibrant Berber culture. Savor traditional dishes, watch local crafts, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the locals.

For Star Wars fans, Matmata is extra special—it’s where the iconic planet Tatooine was brought to life. After your visit, continue to Tataouine, a drive of about 2 to 3 hours, so you can fully explore this region the next day.

Day 14 – Discover the fascinating ksour in Tataouine

On day 14, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the ksour around Tataouine. These ancient fortified granaries, built by the Berbers, served not only for food storage but also as a refuge for villagers.

Start at Ksar Ouled Soltane, one of the most impressive ksour in the region. With its multiple levels and arched rooms connected by stairs and balconies, it’s a photogenic labyrinth. For Star Wars fans, it’s a must-see, as it served as a filming location for The Phantom Menace.

Ksar Hadada is another gem to explore. Its unique stone chambers and passageways, weathered by time, give it a charmingly aged appearance. The narrow passages and arches lend this ksar a mysterious ambiance.

Don’t miss Ksar Guermassa, located on a hill with spectacular views over the desert. This nearly deserted ksar seems straight from another era and offers a unique chance to feel the Berber history firsthand.

Day 15 – Visit the berber villages of Chenini and Douiret

On day 15, visiting the Berber villages of Chenini and Douiret is highly recommended. These hillside villages, surrounded by rugged desert landscapes, offer enchanting views and a unique atmosphere. In Chenini, with its traditional houses and deep ravines, you’ll experience authentic Berber culture. The iconic white mosque minaret contrasts beautifully against the sandy rock. Wander through the narrow streets, explore the troglodyte dwellings, and admire the characteristic architecture that makes Chenini so special.

A short distance away is Douiret, a place with a mysterious charm. Though partially abandoned, you’ll still find traditional cave dwellings carved deep into the rock. Douiret gives a unique glimpse into the centuries-old Berber lifestyle, surrounded by the impressive desert landscape. It feels like stepping back in time, with panoramic views completing the Sahara’s magic.

Afterward, drive to Djerba, about two hours from Tataouine. Arriving around midday, you can relax and enjoy a few hours at the beach.

The island of Djerba

End your journey on the island of Djerba, famous for its beaches, charming villages, and unique culture. It’s the perfect place to relax before heading home. Allow yourself four days to fully immerse in the atmosphere and sights, from colorful streets to stunning beaches.

Visit the El Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest in North Africa. Its beautiful interior of colorful tiles and wood carvings tells the rich history of this spiritual place.

Head to Djerba Explore Park for culture and adventure. Visit the museum to learn about Berber culture and experience the excitement of the Crocodile Park, home to hundreds of Nile crocodiles.

Explore the Guellala Museum in the pottery village of Guellala. Here, you’ll learn more about Berber history and can purchase unique ceramics as souvenirs.

For stunning views of the Mediterranean, visit Borj El Kebir. This 15th-century fortress in Houmt Souk is perfect for panoramic photos. Sun lovers can relax on Djerba’s beaches, from Sidi Mahrez Beach to Aghir Beach, each with its charm.

Don’t miss Djerbahood! This colorful open-air gallery in Erriadh, filled with street art, makes every stroll memorable.

And be sure to enjoy a relaxing thalasso treatment at least once, a Tunisian specialty for wellness and rejuvenation.
